Lesson Description

Explore the phases of the Moon in this cool 80's retro style experience featuring your AI friend LuCIA. Use a model to identify inaccuracies in LuCIA’s coding. Sequence a variety of Moon phase diagrams to “Reprogram” her code. Test the new code to improve the clarity of the galaxy image and reprogram her until a clear image is achieved.

Central Question: Why do Moon phases occur and what is their sequence?

Instructional Objective: Use a model to generate and explain the phenomenon of moon phase sequence (effect) and the arrangement/orbit of the Sun, Earth, Moon system (cause).

Learning Outcomes

  • Learning Outcome #1: Ask questions from observation of phenomena in order to identify the cause and effect relationship of the Sun, Earth, and Moon arrangement in phases of the moon.

  • Learning Outcome #2: Use a model to explore and explain the cause and effect relationship of the view from Earth, reflection of Sun’s radiation, and the pattern of Moon phases.

  • Learning Outcome #3: Use a model to explore and explain the cause and effect relationship between the arrangement of the Sun, Earth, and Moon and the pattern of Moon phases.

Prerequisites

  • Rotation

  • Revolution
