Lesson Description

Investigate what factors on Earth – tilt, position in orbit, latitude – determine which season is being experienced. Through virtual experiments, you will observe how the tilt directly impacts solar intensity, then apply those findings to predict seasons in the Southern Hemisphere.

Central Question

How does Earth’s tilt, position in orbit around the Sun, and latitude determine the season a person will experience?

Instructional Objective

Construct an explanation for seasons in the northern hemisphere using qualitative and quantitative observations in order to predict and describe seasons in the southern hemisphere.

Topics

Learning Outcomes

1. Use a model to investigate solar intensity and it’s effect on temperature in the northern hemisphere.

2. Use a model to investigate the tilt of Earth's axis and its effect on the pattern of the Sun's apparent motion in the sky

Prerequisites

  • Sun, Earth, Moon arrangement
  • Latitude, longitude and hemispheres
  • Rotation and revolution
  • What an angle is and how to measure it
