Strange Ripples in Space
Topics Covered
- Wave Properties
- Mechanical Waves
- Electromagnetic Waves
- Sonification
Lesson Description
Students will study certain examples of wave phenomena that occur in space and some that occur on the earth. They will also review wave properties and the fact that mechanical waves need a medium, while electromagnetic waves do not. While studying a sonic boom, they will make an observation of the number of sounds an airplane makes during a sonic boom by watching a video of an airplane. While studying They will identify the occurrence of a sound based on reading data from a graph. They will "hear" the sounds of the sun through a process called sonification.
Central Question: What are some examples of wave phenomena that occur in space and some that occur on Earth?
Instructional Objective: Students will reinforce their understanding of wave phenomena that occur in space and on Earth.
